Feedback on 17 August edition

·                     I'm delighted for this visitation from the grave. Other local newsletters are very useful in their own ways, but RCDT is unique in certain ways I value - ie basic local news, & a viewpoint independent of Lambeth council's.

·                     well done for getting it out

RCDT is trying to ensure that the ENews/Events Listing continues.

7.15pm for 7.30pm start. OLD LIBRARY BUILDINGS – CHERISH OR DEMOLISH? Don Bianco from English Heritage aims to spark off a debate. Don has expert local knowledge, as he is active in the Upper Norwood Library User Group and the Friends of Lambeth Libraries. The evening is hosted by Libraries for Life for Londoners (LLL), the umbrella group for London library users. Wine and nibbles kindly provided by LLL. They chose the Durning as their venue precisely because it is such a stunning building. Durning Library, 167 Kennington Lane.

YOUR LIBRARY WAS BUILT TO LAST. NOW LOOK AFTER IT!

The purpose-built library is a distinctive building type conceived as part of a municipal identity deploying considerable architectural effect. As evocative reminders of past patterns of culture, having great attachment with communities, their closure, alteration or demolition prompts considerable concern. Designation is warranted for those clearly possessing special architectural or historic interest, but is this enough to save them?

Lambeth Peace Month. Throughout September, residents, local businesses and a range of community groups in Lambeth will be celebrating Peace Month. The theme this year is 'Peace on the Streets'. Peace Month is a partnership between the Metropolitan Police, Lambeth Council and community groups to build a month long programme of fun and thought-provoking events, dedicated to celebrating a peaceful and unified community. From 2004–2006, Lambeth celebrated Peace Week. However, this year, in response to feedback from local communities, the borough is hosting a whole month of events, including: a multi-faith women's art group, various workshops such as Understanding Islam, inter-faith peace banquet, children’s writing competition, multi-faith commemoration and much more. The Youth Oskars on 27 September will showcase the positive contribution that young people make to their communities, and there will also be chance to get on the Peace Bus as it visits schools and housing estates. You can also attend community safety workshops and discussion evenings. For more information and the full programme of events, email peacemonth@lambeth.gov.uk or visit www.lambeth.gov.uk/peaceonthestreets

LOCAL PLANNING APPLICATIONS & NEWS

Coin St Builders Get Planning Permission for Doon St Tower and Leisure Centre. Lambeth Council's planning committee has given planning approval to the new development on Doon Street, on the basis that it includes a new leisure centre for public use and meets other legal conditions. The application was submitted by not-for-profit social entrepreneurs, Coin Street Community Builders, and includes plans for 329 residential units in a forty three storey building, incorporating a new community leisure centre and swimming pool run by Greenwich Leisure. A six storey building will also contain the national headquarters of the Rambert dance studio, and a further eight storey building will include street level shops and cafes as well as educational and office space. In addition, a vacant plot next to the new buildings will become a new 'town square' linking Waterloo station and the IMAX to the National Theatre and other locations on the South Bank.

Lambeth Consults on Housing Guidance. Lambeth Council is consulting on a draft Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) which provides guidance for applicants preparing all forms of housing schemes, from new build, change of use to flat conversions. The aim is to provide guidance to the interpretation of relevant Unitary Development Plan (UDP) policies. The guidance also reflects national policies and the London Plan. The SPD addresses a number of important issues such as minimum room sizes, overall floor areas, provision of amenity space and children’s play space. It also provides further guidance to supplement the UDP policy on flat conversions. Specific requirements are being proposed for the provision of internal storage space which is often overlooked, particularly for flats. The deadline for comments is 5pm 7 September 2007. If you want independent help and advice on this proposal or any other planning matter you can contact Planning Aid for London on Tel: 020 7247 4900. To see the documents go via www.lambeth.gov.uk/Services/HousingPlanning/Planning/

Matinee: Saturday 6th October 2007 3.30PM

Wednesday 3rd October: Post show discussion with Creative Director Eugene Skeef

Vibrant dance, live music and lyrical poetry come together to create Motherland - a compelling story of love, conflict, revenge and resolution set in a world of slavery and forced migration. A powerful story of epic journeys through time and across continents, this is a celebration of different cultures, individual strengths and universal emotions. Energetic and uplifting, Motherland sees traditional art forms cross boundaries and come together to create a new and distinctive piece of dance theatre. An international cast unites on stage to create the sounds, rhythms and movements of India, Africa, the Caribbean and the UK to celebrate the power of the human spirit.

Wednesday 10th October: post show discussion with the creative team

Typhoon is Yellow Earth's international East Asian playreading festival, and the Typhoon Live tour brings this double bill to UK audiences for the first time, performed in English.

Getting Married by Yi Kang-baek (South Korea). A young swindler is looking for love. He has borrowed a big house for the weekend, a suit for the day and he might ask you for a cigarette. When a charming, innocent woman enters, will they find love before the grim butler lurking in the shadows calls time? A light-hearted, surreal fable from South Korea's Daesan Award winner.

Dogs by Elangovan (Singapore). A savagely funny play about the end of love, when a woman pampers her dog rather than her loser of a husband. Racing through the humid night air, this rollercoaster of resentment, disappointment and hatred is full of foul-mouthed humour, with a dark and disturbing ending. From Singapore's International Award and South-East Asian Writer’s Award winner.

Tuesday 16th October 2007 - Saturday 3rd November 2007 7.45PM

Previews: Tuesday 16th & Wednesday 17th October. Signed performances: interpreted by Jacqui Beckford Friday 26th & Tuesday 30th October 7.45pm. Friday 9th October: free post-show discussion.

The trees next door have died. Intrigued by the activities of his new and unexpected neighbours, John watches. Not a surveillance operation or anything like that. Just curious. Mai, meanwhile, is on a journey she did not choose to take. Double Negative is an explosive new performance, which brings these two characters together to explore the darkest and most delicate parts of British society. John wants to help, and Mai to escape; but both are kept busy dealing with their own demons. Their meeting is a charged, poetic exploration of sex trafficking and the unexpected desires that fuel it. Combining bold, original writing with dance and puppetry, this is a lyrical, bleak and funny play that sinks its teeth into the issues of loneliness, sex, wanting to do good; and the flesh trade in its many forms.

30 Bird presents

The Persian Revolution By Mehrdad Seyf

Tuesday 6th November 2007 - Saturday 10th November 2007 7.45PM

Audio described performances: Thursday 8th November with Ian Breslin

Friday 9th November: Free post-show event including panel discussion with Anne Penketh, Diplomatic Editor of The Independent, Iranian music and food

The year is 1906, or so it seems, and revolution is in the air. The Iranian monarchy is about to succumb to the will of the people as the country takes its first tentative step towards democracy. Following the sell-out success of Manjoun, 30 Bird brings a witty and haunting new take on Iranian history to Oval House Theatre as a part of their UK tour. Surreal and darkly comic, The Persian Revolution puts a contemporary spin on the gripping events surrounding the establishment of the Middle East's first secular parliament.

BANNER New York presents

The Lightning Field. Written by David Ozanich. Directed by Jared Coseglia.

Tuesday 13th November 2007 - Saturday 8th December 2007 7.45PM

Previews: Tuesday 13th & Wednesday 14th November 7.45PM

Signed performances: interpreted by Steve Hudson on Tuesday 27th November & Saturday 1st December

With their two-year relationship on-the-rocks, Sam takes his much younger boyfriend, Andy, on a pilgrimage to The Lightning Field: an obscure art installation by Walter DeMaria in the New Mexico desert. Against Andy's wishes, Sam hijacks the trip by inviting his father, Gerrit, and Andy's mother, Lori, both divorcees. But when Lori discovers Sam's intent to propose to Andy, she begs Andy to embrace his youth and reject the conventions of marriage. Meanwhile, questions about Sam's fidelity surface, forcing Gerrit to expose the truth about his own indiscretions in hopes Sam will reform his promiscuous and violent ways. This 90 minute one act drama probes deep into the psychology of love and the sometimes brutal sacrifices we are willing to make to hold onto it.

In 2006, Soweto released the first of a two-part concept album, A Life In The Day Of B19 - Tales Of The Tower Block, which follows three fictional characters as they each come to terms with the pitfalls of celebrity, romantic entanglements, and the solitude of the musician’s quest. Traversing jazz, hip-hop and poetry, it weaves a narrative and message of hope through a diverse range of musical worlds. It marks a massive upward shift in Soweto’s stature as a significant, major artist, and has led to him supporting some major US soul and hip-hop stars such as KRS-ONE and Dwele.
