DON’T LOSE YOUR CHANCE TO VOTE. The heat being generated by the General Election speculation could mean that an election is run on the current register up to 31 December, and on the new register from 1 January 2008. And there is the Mayor of London and GLA elections in next May. The new register is being compiled at the moment. Lambeth Council is urging residents not to lose their right to vote by making sure that they are on the register. All residents were sent a form in August. If you have not returned it you are urged to do so. If you want to check you are on the draft register contact the Council: 020 7926 2144. Have any of your neighbours moved in since August who you could advise to make sure they get on the register? See www.lambeth.gov.uk/News/PressReleases/280907DontLoseRightVote.htm

SIMON JENKINS ATTACKS MAYOR AND GOVERNMENT OVER TOWER BLOCK BONANAZA. In Friday’s Guardian Simon Jenkins roundly attacked the obsession with tower blocks: ‘Size is everything to a mayor consumed by edifice complex’. ‘Ken Livingstone is allowing a forest of giant towers to dwarf and destroy the intimate landscape of London’. He includes derision about the way John Prescott overrode the Council, residents and the Inspector over the proposed St George’s Tower at Vauxhall. See: www.guardian.co.uk/Columnists/Column/0,,2178952,00.html

The growing threat of tower blocks was flagged up by Michael Ball (Waterloo Community Development Group worker) at Kennington, Oval & Vauxhall Forum in autumn 2006.

The purpose of the Friends organisation will be to support, protect and help develop the Care Centre, a half-way house between hospital and home, especially for those living alone and for the elderly.
