Blades House, Matthew Darbyshire’s first solo show in a public UK institution takes as a departure the domestic interior of a fictitious, urban middle-class professional in his mid-thirties. The character and his choice of furniture, textiles, art and other paraphernalia are used as a vehicle to address issues of taste, style, aspiration, class distinction and demographic blurring. The actual floor-plan of Darbyshire’s installation is based on a two-bedroom flat in Blades House which is part of the Kennington Park Estate, next to Gasworks. Darbyshire’s life-size mock-up draws its inspiration from numerous conversions of two-bed council flats into spacious and airy contemporary-style ‘one-beds’. HOUSE OF AGNES. Play at Oval House Theatre by Levi David Addai. 4-29 March at Oval House Theatre. Paines Plough present House of Agnes by Levi David Addai, a new play by a young writer whose recent Royal Court debut, 93.2FM, was a critical sensation. The play is a  tender, astute and humorous portrait of clashing traditional and cultural values in modern family life. After 40 years of building a home in London, Agnes is retiring and moving back to Ghana. Her final wish is for her sons to live together under the same roof when she is gone. But her eldest, Sol, is living with a girlfriend Agnes loathes, and he won't move home until Agnes accepts her. Meanwhile, younger brother Caleb will do whatever it takes to inherit the house – except share it with Sol. As her departure draws closer, the tensions in Agnes’ house rise to breaking point. Will she trust her 21st century boys and finally allow them to be men? Who will own the House of Agnes? Previews: 4 & 5 March at 7.45pm. Tickets: £12 / £6 concessions, (including Refugee Community Organisations); previews £6. Roots & Shoots. Lambeth's Living Waters and Spring Science Fair. This year's programme for National Science and Engineering Week is "Lambeth's Living Waters Mk 11". The children of Walnut Tree Walk Primary will again be delving into the microscopic world of pond waters and Thames water and any other bits of water that look interesting around here to see what's alive in there - but with the added help of Prof. Jane Lewis from the University of Westminster. With Jane, artists Martha and Reen, David will be guiding the children through investigations of life cycles and microscopic ecology in their samples of water and in the making of giant models of creatures they find. These will be used to transform the Wildlife Garden Study Centre at Roots and Shoots into a 'walk-in microscopic pond' on Sunday 16th March. We will be running live microscope workshops so that you can see for yourself. There will be other children's activities and story-telling in and around the Study Centre and Garden. There will also be demonstrations and workshops on SOLAR ENERGY by SOLAR CENTURY, the main supplier of photovoltaics in the UK, who supplied the roof for the Roots and Shoots hall. Producers' Stalls and Refreshments and, hopefully, a visit from the Lambeth Walk Musical Dragon will make it a lively day. www.rootsandshoots.org.uk

Michael Twaits returns to Oval House Theatre due to overwhelming popular demand. In November 2007, Oval House Theatre presented the stage debut for this radical, uncompromising and alluring solo performer. Confessions of a Dancewhore was a runaway success – a solo show without pretension or self-indulgence, but one which proved an assured, politically savvy, and raucous evening of theatre, performance, comedy and entertainment. In an unusual move, Oval House has invited Michael Twaits to return to us with a late night version of his show – running for six weeks due to popular demand. NEWS

Archbishop Sumner is setting up a Parents Council. Archbishop Sumner Primary School is setting up a Parent’s Council to offer suggestions &  ideas for school improvement. The Council will meet termly on Fridays. Comment. While Parents Councils/Parent Teachers Associations can play a valuable role, experience also shows that Pupils Councils can also have a tremendous beneficial effect, especially if the Governing Bodies allocate them a budget.

Archbishop Summer News. This coming week Aesop’s Theatre will be in to perform a play on World War 2 for KS2. The whole school had performances of Rudyard Kipling’s stories. Year 2 & 4 had class workshops. Every class has visited the Durning library and had a story time. Year 3 were challenged to make Egyptian mummies. ‘They are wonderful – it’s amazing what can be mummified, including teddies!! ‘

Vauxhall Primary School Spring Fayre 29 March. The Head Shirley Wilson explains. ‘The event will be a fun day for local children and their families at the school, designed to bring our local community together and allow them to have their say on The Children and Young People’s Plan 3 currently being developed by Lambeth Council. We are working in partnership with the London Borough of Lambeth and Involve to deliver a new method for community consultation specifically targeting some of those groups and individuals whose voices are often under-represented in traditional processes. By hosting a fun day we hope to attract and engage with busy parents who, in their every day lives, have limited time to engage in consultation processes.

Vauxhall Primary School will host the event on Saturday 29th of March. We hope to organise the day around the theme of spring. The focus of the day will be to create an enjoyable environment for families with activities for children. The consultation itself will be neither intrusive nor compulsory and will take a less formal format than traditional consultations in keeping with the atmosphere of the event.

We aim to market this event broadly to families in the local area. Primarily we will draw on the school’s own network through pupils and their parents. We want this event to provide not only a platform for the Council’s consultation but to give local community groups the opportunity to be involved, so we would be delighted if you would join us on the day. If you would like to do so by organising a stall or activity on the day for participants please do let us know. Participating in this event will give you the opportunity to voice the concerns of your members and stakeholders and to promote your work to a local audience. We would also encourage you to take part in the consultation itself to bring your specific knowledge of issues in the local area. Even if you cannot make it on the day, we would also be grateful for your assistance in publicising the event and encouraging local people to come along on the day. For that purpose we will be producing marketing materials which will be distributed in the weeks prior to the date of the event. We are happy to offer support where we can with any logistical issues you may have.

We want this event to be to an exciting opportunity for the local community and we hope that this process will help make the consultation an accessible and empowering experience which can genuinely deliver results for local people. We would love to hear your thoughts and any suggestions you may have about how you think we can make this event a success.

We will send further information regarding the specific detail of the consultation and the format it will take in due course.’

Lambeth Plans Tough Action Against Violent Youth Crime. Lambeth Council has issued the following  statement on its website.  The Lambeth community agreed to a tough action plan to tackle violent youth crime at a major summit at the Oval on February 14, making the borough the first in the country to have a comprehensive approach to tackling gun, gang and knife crime. The event, which took place a year after fifteen year old Billy Cox lost his life to gun crime on Clapham's Fenwick Estate, also included a tribute to all young people and families who have been affected by violent crime. The tribute was led by local young people whose lives have turned around on the council's award-winning X-it programme, including some who have been involved in gangs. The action plan follows an investigation by a council-coordinated executive commission into the causes of youth crime. The investigation was put together after 27 young people in London lost their lives in 2007, despite five successive years of overall crime reduction in Lambeth. Proposals agreed on at the summit include:

  • a forty percent increase in investment to help young people get their lives back on track
  • a new intelligence gathering unit to target young offenders
  • seven-day opening for Lambeth youth clubs.

Lambeth First partners - including the council, police, local community groups and practitioners working in the youth sector - signed an action 'pledge' at the summit, committing to take tough action on this issue.

Phyllis Dunipace, Executive Director for Children and Young People's Services at Lambeth Council said: "We've developed a range of short-term and long-term actions following our research into the root causes of youth crime, and we're now one of the only boroughs in the country to have developed a targeted action plan to tackle this issue. Only a minority of young people get involved in violent crime but the impact these crimes have on family and the community is huge. We're determined to give all Lambeth young people the best opportunities in life and this action plan will build on our current work and help us to create a safer community."

Suggested measures cover key areas including enforcement, schools, youth services, community support, skills training and family support. They include:

  • A range of support programmes to provide advice for parents who are concerned their children are involved in crime, and a forum where parents can share advice and support.
  • Establishing an independent trust, part-governed by parents and the community, that could control a significant amount of spending to support young people.
  • Increasing the use of parenting orders and contracts when parents don't fulfil their responsibilities.
  • An additional £1.75 million will be invested in youth services this year, and will be used to extend youth club opening hours
  • A 'detached' youth working team, with specialist knowledge of Lambeth groups, will also be created, to extend current youth work and reach the most socially excluded young people.
  • The council's award winning X-it programme, which has been successful in preventing 72 per cent of young attendees from re-offending, will also be extended across the borough.
  • Tailored training courses that will help increase employment opportunities for young people living in areas of high unemployment, contributing toward the borough-wide target to achieve 70 per cent employment by 2012.
  • On the enforcement side, a new intelligence-gathering unit will be created to help police and other agencies to share information they already hold separately about problem families and individuals.

Lambeth Council Tax Up n.5%, Services Down. Lambeth Council has agreed the budget for the new financial year; up goes Council Tax; less spending on services. The Council statement says: ‘ In addition to investment in a number of areas including young people, the environment, and community safety, the budget outlines plans to make millions of pounds of savings to increase future financial stability and minimise cost to the taxpayer. The majority of savings will be made by increasing efficiency across the organisation, with minimal impact on public services.’ ‘Despite the severe financial pressures that face many local authorities - including a low grant increase from government for Lambeth - the proposals include an additional three quarters of a million pounds for youth programmes over the next year, plus continued investment in the borough's anti social behaviour team and increased money for victims of domestic violence.’ Key investments announced in the budget include:

  • £284,000 each year for the borough's anti-social behaviour team
  • £100,000 on a service for victims of domestic violence to be increased to £205,000
  • £1.1 million in youth provision over the next three years, with extended opening hours for youth activities
  • An increase in investment to £227,000 to make sure that vulnerable Lambeth residents get the benefits they are entitled to.

Money raised by Council Tax contributes 8 percent of the Council's budget.
