Are local businesses finding difficulty getting blue commercial waste sacks from Lambeth’s Street Care Team? If you are running a business have you been having difficulty, like RCDT, in getting Lambeth Council’s Street Care Team to deliver blue commercial waste sacks. After weeks of fruitless requests RCDT local asked local Councillor Stephen Morgan to look into the matter. He has been told thatit seems to be that there has been a problem with the ticket for the blue sack delivery.  Blue sack delivery tickets are generated automatically by our system; unfortunately in very rare cases, the system fails to produce a new ticket.  I have spoken to the person who is currently managing this area for commercial waste and have asked her to produce a delivery request ticket (manually) to instruct the contractors to deliver the sacks. The delivery could take a couple of weeks however, I will request the sacks to be delivered as soon as possible.’ So if you are also having a problem why not contact your local Councillor: see details on Links page on www.rcdt.org.

Wednesday 25 July. Push the Envelope Further

Beaconsfield, RCDT and Lady Margaret Hall Settlement event on the future of the arts and culture in the area. A Cultural Quarter in Vauxhall/Kennington? How likely is that? The truth is, it¹s not so far fetched. When plans for an Artisan School, an Arts and Crafts Museum and Damien Hirst¹s proposed Newport Street development are positioned against galleries, art spaces and studios already flourishing in the area, the idea is not only a distinct possibility, but almost a reality. The Push the Envelope Further event will pick up from discussions at last year¹s ‘Push the Envelope’ Symposium to focus on local initiatives already underway. A local walkabout will be followed by the first public presentation of the Kennington Quarter proposal and a panel discussion about the future of Leftbank Artists Network. ‘Push the Envelope’ the publication will be launched at 5.30pm. ‘Push the Envelope Further’ is jointly organised by Beaconsfield, Riverside Community Development Trust and Lady Margaret Hall Settlement.

Guided Walk. RCDT’s Development & Management Worker Sean Creighton will lead a guided walk around the Vauxhall/Kennington area looking at its arts and cultural heritage and opportunity sites including the sites of the former Lambeth School of Art, the former Doulton Factory, the former Lilian Baylis School site and the Beaufoy Institute.
Kennington Arts Quarter proposal is the plan to re-energise the arts and crafts by linking the Beaufoy Institute, former Lilian Baylis School site and Newport Street arts hub development, including an Artisans School, and an Arts & Crafts Movement Museum. The proposal will be presented by Jeffe Jeffers, Director of Lady Margaret Hall Settlement.
Push the Envelope’ the publication records a discussion with Peter St-John, Anna Harding, Tony Carter, Jeffe Jeffers, Sheena Wagstaff and Richard Grayson which took place at the Beaconsfield symposium Push the Envelope sustaining arts communities on the left-bank, July 2006. The debate addressed a range of issues including: the impact economic ‘regeneration’ is likely to have on existing art communities in North Lambeth and the lessons to be learned from arts-led regeneration in other areas, such as London¹s East End; the project to reconnect craft skills with art practice in a hostile climate and the pros and cons of running small-scale operations in the shadow of Tate.  The event also launched a new North Lambeth arts network: Leftbank Artists.
Programme:
1.30pm walkabout: meet outside St Peter¹s Church, 310 Kennington Lane
3.15pm arrive at 22 Newport Street (Beaconsfield)
3.30pm launch presentation: Kennington Arts Quarter
4.30pm panel discussion: Developing Leftbank Artists Network
5.30pm publication launch: Push the Envelope

The Pineapple: King of Fruits with Fran Beauman
EVENING LECTURE: Tickets: £10 or £5 Museum Friends
Writer Fran Beauman celebrates the juicy history of the pineapple, from its earliest beginnings in the Brazilian rainforests to its role today being stuffed unceremoniously into cans. Drawing from her book The Pineapple: King of the Fruits. She explores why the pineapple has been such an important status symbol with fascinating stories and facts. For example, during the 1700s the cost to produce one pineapple was about £5,000 in today’s money – the same as the cost of a new coach. The evening will include pineapple themed food from historical recipes in her book, which could include pineapple tart from 1732 to canned pineapple with baked beans in 1958. Pina colada cocktails will be available to enjoy in the Museum gardens. Museum of Garden History, Lambeth Rd/Palace Rd.

Shreds of Evidence. In November 2006 Simon Woolham started a four month residency at the Museum of Garden History developing works that subtly dialogue with the Museum architecture and artefacts. During that time he also ran a series of workshops with year 5 pupils from Walnut Tree Walk School, a primary school located in the vicinity of the Museum.
The children workshops have concentrated on the exploration of their favourite places both in the playground and in the Museum. Using drawing, language, digital manipulation and sound, the children have produced a variety of works which will be presented in the school - three-dimensional paper models - and in the Museum - drawings in snowdomes and digital animations.  A Private Paradise. Donna Conlon,  Uta Kögelsberger, Tinna Ludviksdottir, Sarah Woodfine. In her video, Donna Conlon presents a sequence of lights blinking to the sound of Christmas tunes translated into Morse code in an attempt to search for messages, greater truths, evidence of another world. Through her series of photographs of gardens in California and the South of France, Uta Kögelsberger tries to reveal people's notions of an ideal place while Sarah Woodfine, in her three-dimensional drawing construction, retraces the discovery of another realm by Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. With four photographic triptychs scrutinizing the world around her, Tinna Ludviksdottir concludes that a private paradise can maybe only exist within oneself.

Helga Steppan. Be long a part.  Helga Steppan uses photography in combination with installation, moving-image and elements of performance. In Belongings Apart, Steppan has invited her friends to lend her something they own which is transparent. The objects will be presented as a large sculptural installation, shown together with photographs of the different locations where they previously belonged and a written piece by each owner. The written texts describe the meanings and associations which the objects hold for their owner. Removed from their original environment and juxtaposed with other objects in a new context they become anonymous and subject to multiple different readings and interpretations. Belongings Apart questions the extent to which an object or possession can ever represent its owner or hold a particular meaning and invites the audience to discover its own associations in the work. A publication called Belongings Apart which documents the process, will accompany the exhibition and includes an introductory essay by Åsa Ståhl.

Island Block Exhibition Were you delighted when the old GLC Island Block was demolished? An exhibition about the Block has been organised by Parabola Trust at The Launch Pad Gallery, The Building Centre, 26 Store Street, London,  WC1E 7BT. This exhibition during Architecture Week 2007 explores the demolished London landmark of the former Greater London Council offices in SE1. The installation incorporates an interactive architectural model, laser sculpture, drawings, original plans and documents, a video exploring the rich pictorial history from the early drafts and models. See also Saturdays 23 & 30 June below. Built in 1973 this geometric brutalist block was intended to house 1,500 council staff but stood empty for two decades until its demolition in earlier this year. The installation by the artist Charbel Ackermann will mark the disappearance of the hapless building and celebrate it for its architectural merit, although it was the last, and as it turned out the weakest, addition to the South Bank’s collection of Modernist structures, marked most boldly by Denys Lasdun’s National Theatre, and the exposed concrete volumes of the Queen Elizabeth Hall. It will be the first co-operation of this important venue for urbanism with visual artists and musicians.
