which took place at the

symposium Push the Envelope sustaining arts communities on the
left-bank, July 2006. The debate addressed a range of issues
including: the impact economic ‘regeneration’ is likely to have on
existing art communities in North Lambeth and the lessons to be
learned from arts-led regeneration in other areas, such as London¹s
East End; the project to reconnect craft skills with art practice in
a hostile climate and the pros and cons of running small-scale
operations in the shadow of Tate. The event also launched a new
North Lambeth arts network: Leftbank Artists.

Volunteering in Kennington Primary Schools.
RSVP
(the Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme of Community Service
Volunteers) has launched a Lambeth Schools Volunteering project, and
would like to recruit volunteers for schools in and around
Kennington. Primary schools present a great opportunity for people
to give three (or more) hours a week as a volunteer, helping with
reading, maths or other class-room activities, or in a whole range
of other ways. Volunteers are greatly appreciated by the teachers
and – especially – by the children. Individual attention from a
volunteer can provide a significant boost to a child’s reading,
confidence and willingness to learn. Volunteers are an invaluable
assistance to hard-pressed teachers and, of course, the volunteers
gain greatly from the experience. Local people in local schools,
bringing people together across cultures and generations: everyone
wins! There are about a dozen community and voluntary aided primary
schools in and around Kennington, providing education and cultural
skills to the children of Kennington, but also contributing in many
ways to the vitality of the area – for example the involvement of
children from Lambeth schools in the recent re-opening of the Royal
Festival Hall. Readers interested in volunteering are invited to
contact Tony Bell: Tel: 020 7652 4276; e-mail:
tonybell-rsvp@ntlworld.com.
Information about RSVP can be found on
its website

Helga Steppan. Be
long a part.
Helga Steppan uses
photography in combination with installation, moving-image
and elements of performance. In
Belongings Apart, Steppan has invited her friends to
lend her something they own which is transparent. The
objects will be presented as a large sculptural
installation, shown together with photographs of the
different locations where they previously belonged and a
written piece by each owner. The written texts describe the
meanings and associations which the objects hold for
their owner. Removed from their original environment and
juxtaposed with other objects in a new context they become
anonymous and subject to multiple different readings and
interpretations. Belongings Apart questions the
extent to which an object or possession can ever represent
its owner or hold a particular meaning and invites the
audience to discover its own associations in the work. A
publication called Belongings Apart which documents
the process, will accompany the exhibition and includes an
introductory essay by Åsa Ståhl.. |
