Michael Twaits returns to Oval House Theatre due to overwhelming popular demand. In November 2007, Oval House Theatre presented the stage debut for this radical, uncompromising and alluring solo performer. Confessions of a Dancewhore was a runaway success – a solo show without pretension or self-indulgence, but one which proved an assured, politically savvy, and raucous evening of theatre, performance, comedy and entertainment. In an unusual move, Oval House has invited Michael Twaits to return to us with a late night version of his show – running for six weeks due to popular demand. NEWS

Changes at Oval Partnership. Tricia Anderson writes: Changes are taking place within Oval Partnership and although after March there will be no paid workers, it doesn't mean the work stops: it will just be done in a different way!  There is a lively, competent community in this area and there is no reason why things do not continue: it is up to you, the community, to carry them forward, supporting the newly elected Oval Partnership Management Committee. In order to keep the Farmers Market community led and focused, a small working group is being set up as an  'Oval friends of the farmers market'. The Public Realm Strategy has got off to a flying start with an interim report being presented at the Oval Partnership AGM last week and there are a lot of passionate responses/reactions to some of the issues that are being raised. You can still give your views or do a street diary highlighting things that you find.  A group of residents from IMPACT and Oval Partnership will continue championing this piece of work. Two small sub-groups linked to health and environment are in place so that projects such as 'know your numbers (blood pressure checks) or street parties or encouraging local residents to 'green' their streets with window boxes can still happen.  Or maybe you would like to resurrect the Oval Partnership art sub-group and make sure that another 'sculpture' of some sort is put on public display. How can you get involved?  After 28th March, email contact@ovalpartnership.org.uk or visit the just-set-up web site on http://www.ovalpartnership.org.uk Do you want to know more or, even better, get involved with Oval Partnership?  Join in, take part and let's continue to make things happen. It's been an extremely enjoyable two years for me and as I live in the area, although I won't be a paid worker I remain committed to the community and being involved with the on going work of Oval Partnership. Au revoir as Oval Partnership Project Development Officer - but still a 'hello, see you around' .

Wolf in the House. Play by Simon Wu. Directed by Jonathan Man. Dramaturgy by Esther Richardson. Weds 2nd April,  8pm, It is a stormy night in Hong Kong. But tonight is the Festival of Hungry Ghosts where things are not quite what they seem. This psychological thriller sees Kai struggling to hide his inner demons of grief & hatred, as Ming precariously hungers for something more.   Text Box: Vauxhall Gardens is a name that conjures the pleasures of big city life. It reminds us that great towns provide opportunities for communal festivities and concord, as well as the often-stressed potential for urban problems and conflict. This study explains how Vauxhall emerged as the brand-leader of the urban pleasure garden, from among the ranks of sixty or more rival gardens in post-Restoration London. Vauxhall became fashionable; it was popular; it was brilliantly organised; it was musical; it was entertaining; it had fireworks; it was a meeting place for lovers… it had it all. But the continuing transformations of London brought changes. Vauxhall did not endure for ever. While the new Oval Cricket. Ground managed to survive in nearby south London, Vauxhall’s Pleasure Gardens disappeared. It took more than fame and, later, nostalgia to keep a front-rank leisure amenity going on the south bank. By studying Vauxhall’s rise and fall, we can understand the upheavals of the entertainment sector in the ‘modern’ city – and appreciate the message of Vauxhall’s legend.

Penelope J. Corfield teaches history at Royal Holloway. University of London. Last year she published Time and the Shape of History (Yale University Press, 2007), on ‘big history’ from start to finish. But she also keeps her research feet on the ground, with studies of the social, cultural, and urban history of Georgian and Victorian Britain.

Vauxhall and the Invention of the Urban Pleasure Gardens is published by History & Social Action Publications. ISBN 978-0-9548943-3-7
