NEWS

FoDL XMAS PARTY.  Veronica Ledwith writes: The Friends of the Durning Library Christmas Party on 10 December was a roaring success, despite the library's power cut which forced a last-minute change of venue.  A huge team effort, spearheaded by chairman Priscilla Baines, transferred the whole event to Amici's, who kindly hired out their basement.  Desmond Payne, master distiller of Beefeater Gin off Kennington Lane, entertained a packed house with the history of “Gin as it should be” - and shouldn’t.  Good food, drink and raffle prizes kept spirits high. Beefeater is now the only "London" gin produced in London, apart from one small Clapham make. Gin came from Holland in the 17th century, and you can make it from almost anything; what makes it gin is juniper, originally introduced to hide the flavour of very dodgy hooch. Today's recipes still vary.  Beefeater includes exotica like orris root (a major ingredient of Chanel No. 5), but Desmond has tasted other gins containing sulphuric acid.

LOCAL HISTORY WALKS. Last Saturday’s local history walk which was to be led by Sean Creighton was rained off. Instead Sean talked at the gallery about its building history, Oval Mansions, the development of that stretch of Vauxhall St, formerly Devonshire Place, the stretch of Kennington Oval round to Harleyford St, Harleyford St, St Mark’s Church and Kennington Park. Those attending then went to see the performance of a short play based on interviews by Gasworks artists with local residents on the Kennington Park Estate. The walk on Saturday 1 December went from Gasworks round the Kennington Oval to Harleyford Rd, along Harleyford Rd popping into the Community Garden, and round into Kennington Lane to talk about the Catholic and St Peter’s Churches and the Lambeth School of Art.

HOMEGROUND MAGAZINE. The Winter issue of Homeground, Hyde Southbank Homes magazine for its residents edited by Elaine Kramer, is as excellent as always. Apart from the usual round up of interesting news stories, this issue’s local history feature is on Charlie Chaplin, triggered by the crisis faced by the Cinema Museum being told it had to leave its premises in Kennington. The stories below on Hyde and Kennington Park Community Centre are based on material in the magazine, with thanks to Elaine. If you would like hard copies they will be available from Stockwell Resource Centre, 1 Studley Road, SW4 or HSH Stockwell office - 275 -277 Clapham Road, SW9 from 20 December. If you want to receive it by email then contact Elaine Kramer on homegroundmagazine@googlemail.com

“AFTER IRAQ - SHALL WE EVER INTERVENE AGAIN?” Monday 21 January: Paddy Ashdown, Marine, diplomat, politician and latterly UN High Representative in Bosnia, will share his views on conflict resolution.  6.45pm for 7pm, Durning Library, 172 Kennington Lane. Friends of During Library. Free entry (suggested donation £2).  Refreshments.
